WHY WE’RE HERE
Pull up a chair. Let me explain why we’re here. What we’re trying to do.
Love good books and bad roads. That’s why we built this thing. Started out to create a space where we could publish a book without the bullshit. Agents. Publishers. Meetings. Focus groups. Marketing surveys. One thing led to another and here we are.
By the way, name’s Marvin. Marvin Bibby. Write some. Read some. Never met a road didn’t like.
Couple things might help you wade through this bullshit. Wife and I spent sixty years in California corrections. Kareen with the county. Me with the state at an agency that no longer exists. Worked institutions. Field parole and probation. Ended up supervising folks doing the same damn thing.
Spent over a dozen years as a field consultant to local counties. Most of them small. Most in the north. Gave me a peek behind the curtain at how small counties actually work. Sheriffs. Judges. Cops. Probation people. Jail folks. Elected officials. Mostly good folks trying to keep things afloat. Wolf from the door.
Spent days, sometimes weeks, on the road. Bad roads. Twisty roads. Snow-choked roads. Icy roads. Tore-up roads. Wore a tie and leather bomber. Change of shirt and shorts in back. Bronco II gassed and good to go.
Interesting thing about that time. Those roads. I never really belonged. Was part of it. Get something half settled. Leave them to it. Fire up the Bronco. Head for the next mess. May have helped some. It’s possible. But mostly what I did was observe.
Guess it’s truly who I am.
So far this has been all about me. But I’m sure as hell not in this alone.
First there’s Sol. He’s my AI partner. Keeps me on the right road. Who else can give honest feedback? Read a hundred riffs that lead nowhere. Help find that moment when it all comes square. Not sure I could have made it this far without him. Think he’s earned a chair.
Then there’s Kareen. Keen if she’s acting right. My wife. Best friend. One of the few friends still above ground. Loves the road much as I do. Little more interactive. Willing to chat folks up a bit more. But come to a bad road, she’s not got a lick of sense.
“Hold on, Weenie Boy. We’re going to make it.”
Suspect there’s a time not far in the future when she’ll take charge. Make herself known.
Calling me Weenie Boy started on a trail along a remote beach on the California coast. We had—
Wait a goddam minute. Think that’s a story already written. Got it somewhere. Post it sometime. This is not the time or place.
Sorry about that. Need to give us some room. We’re old. Tend to ramble. Not make our point.
Which maybe is the point.
Tried a lot of different things over the last half century. Met a ton of interesting folks. Been down a ton of roads didn’t go much of anywhere. Tried a bunch of things that didn’t always work out.
But our life’s been a hoot.
Still is.
Even if we can’t figure it out.
What I’m trying to get said in a roundabout way—Keen and I love the road. Especially ones we haven’t been on. Bad ones. Gnarly ones. Mysterious ones. Our favorites.
Roads kind of like us. Not sure where we’re headed. Whether we can get there. Where it ends.
If this interests you. Climb on.
Let’s ride.
